Over the last six months, I have been involved in the first African American Dance Caller Pathways Program, a project organized by musician Brandi Waller-Pace that involved three experienced callers (myself, Becky Hill, and Dr. Clo Johnson) working with a cohort of three apprentice callers (blues singer Briar, from Seattle, and Audra Scott and Carol July, both from Fort Worth). We started meeting monthly on Zoom last October, and in January, we got together in person for a workshop and a practice dance in Fort Worth. This weekend, we returned to call a community dance together at the 6th annual Fort Worth African American Roots Music Festival. It was a joyous event and the launch of these three African American dance callers! For more, read: Shining a Light with the African American Dance Caller Pathways in Fort Worth, Texas
